"When
a prey animal chooses to trust you as his leader, he is placing
his life into your hands.
|
|
|
|
 |
| |
|
This
act of faith is by far the greatest compliment any animal
can pay you.
Be
grateful and proud
but above all, be responsible, and
worthy of his gift."

Occasionally,
despite their best intentions, animal owners find themselves unable
to establish a satisfactory relationship with their animals.
Not surprisingly,
when this occurs, the frustration generated can be the cause of
handling practices which are at best ineffective or at worst, undesirable.
To avoid this
situation, at Kingbilli we employ a system of remedial teaching
- first for the animal, then its handler - which Georgie advocates
and to which she is deeply committed.
|
|
| |
| Her methods have proved
to be successful, easily applied
rewarding, in that today, our animals
are affable |
| contented
and easily managed. |
|
|
She specializes
in working with horses; llamas; alpacas and donkeys
and of
course, their owners! Her
philosophy is based on four simple principles.
1. Individuality
|
|
|
|
Just as each
human has a distinctive and individual personality, causing him
to behave; accept; or react to any given situation in a particular
way
an animal also - even within his own species - has his own unique
and individual personality. This very individuality affects the
manner in which he behaves; accepts; or reacts to any event.
2. Co-operation
Co-operation between handler and animal is always more effective
than control and intimidation of the animal by the handler.
3. Trust
Replacement of fear - in both humans and animals - with mutual trust
and respect is the basis of a good working relationship between
animal and handler.
4. Communication
|
|
|
| Teaching the handler
and animal to communicate clearly to one another, ensures each will understand
what is required of him
from the other. |
| |
| Therefore
- in order to achieve lasting results - before embarking upon any
of the work required to establish a happy |
 |
and productive
future partnership between the animal and its owner/handler, Georgie
believes it is imperative that time is spent observing each animal's
behaviour.
Once this
becomes clear, her next step is to work solely with the animal,
gaining his trust and co-operation, developing a bond of mutual
respect and understanding. It is essential to establish clear patterns
of communication, which will in turn, assist him to overcome any
problems he may have exhibited earlier.
|
|
 |
When this has
been achieved - and the time required may vary - the next stage
is to spend time with the owner, familiarizing him/her with the
handling methods newly established, so (s)he may continue to apply
them, and so achieve a happy, relaxed and productive relationship
with his/her animal.
