| In
the world of wildlife rescue, not every story has a happy ending ... but the memories
live on in our hearts, and in the words and photographs on this page. |

Little "Honey-Honey"
was an exquisite, delicate creature, and an absolute joy to know. |
| |
|
|
|
Arriving at just
3 months old and a mere 290 grams, she levelled me with an unblinking black-eyed
gaze even Audrey Hepburn would have envied. Despite big floppy ears and bright
pink skin at least two sizes too large for her minute frame, she maintained an
air of dignified composure at all times ... and was totally unfazed by anyone
or anything. Her
mother was killed by a car travelling along the road to Jerusalem Creek, on the
shores of Lake Eildon. Orphan
Swampies are renowned for their confidence, and Honey was no exception. With her
bold personality and minute stature, she combined fragility and fortitude in one
neat package.
| |
| Exhibiting
tremendous confidence for one so small, she was ever eager to observe the curious
activities of this great big world. Sadly,
her chance to experience the world was all too brief. Several
days had passed between her mother's death and Honey's rescue, and after just
a few short months it became apparent the severe dehydration she suffered during
that time had led to kidney damage. Suddenly,
without warning, her health deteriorated and despite every possible effort, she
died. If only the person who had hit her mother had stopped,
|
| Honey
would have survived. Sometimes,
unexpectedly, one encounters a truly special individual ... and even though such
an experience may be fleeting, the impression it leaves is lasting . She was unique,
her intelligence remarkable, and her will to live intense. No
matter how many babies follow her through the centre, her memory lingers
|
| on.
Not a week passes when I do not think of Honey, and imagine the life she should
be leading today. She will never be forgotten. |

| To
19th century naturalists, Wombats were a type of marsupialian Badger. To modern-day
wildlife carers, they are an animated version of a miniature Bulldozer - with
attitude. A sure-fire method of deterring a Wombat from marching from Point A
to Point B is to remove all objects in between. If there's nothing to push out
of the way - they'll waddle off someplace else. However, if there IS something
over there worthy of a good ol' shove ... well, that's a different story. |
| |
|
Most folk think
of Wombats as slow, lumbering creatures - well think again. As babies - and adults
- their speed of movement rivals that of a Kangaroo, and their busy little minds
will frequently surprise you. Tinky
was a bouncy, playful, affectionate baby. Life with her was a little like having
a live Teddy Bear crossed with something in-between a puppy and a human toddler.
| |
|
She loved unzipping
zips, turning sideways somersaults and falling asleep down my sleeve. She
had a peculiar aversion to wrist-watches ... was rather an accomplished typist
... and boasted quite the cutest, brightest pink feet of any living creature.
She
is greatly missed. | |

Whilst
not really twins, these two caramel Kangaroos ate, slept and bounced together
... and confused the most observant babysitter with their coordinated colourings.

Huckleberry
was the original pouch potato ... and the most well-behaved of babies.
He came when called, drank like a dream ... and was beautifully toilet trained
from about day three. Bridget,
on the other hand, whilst giving the impression of supreme grace and serenity,
was the original prima donna. Quick tempered and fiercely determined, she did
what she liked, when she liked, and heaven help anyone who tried to tell her otherwise. |
